The battle continues! This week we are focusing on our Dragonstone section of the bracket and there are key characters involved with this group.
jamie lannister (7) vs brienne of tarth (10)
I’m not sure we can name another character in all of the seasons of Thrones that has gone through more of a transformation than Ole’ Gold Hand has. At the end of season one, the majority of fans shared a collective “fuck that guy’ when referencing Jamie, BUT he’s turned into a fan favorite. He’s proven he has honor and the soft moments he’s spent with Brienne show another side to him. Granted, he was introduced as the King Slayer, was caught fucking his sister, and immediately tried to murder a child….soooooo nowhere to go other than up from there, right? Regardless, I am glad that he’s left his sister and is keeping his word to ride North and join the fight against the Night King. What happens to him from here is a mystery though, because I could see anything from him helping to win the fight by sacrificing his life, to winning and staying with Brienne and Tyrion, to winning and then murdering Jon and Dany mid thrust on the boat home. I want to say he’ll maintain honor, but do you really see him betraying the only woman he’s ever loved and going to fight against Cersei?
With all of the Mad King’s daughter could turn into the Mad Queen talk, lost is the fact that Cersei is in full on Mad Queen rampage right now and there could be a story-line that parallels the previous version where Jamie kills his sister to avoid millions of innocent people being killed at her hands. It’s possible, and even expected by some, that he kills her to fulfill the prophecy, but how does he get there? It has to be an either/or situation here because he’s betraying someone by the end. Either he goes against Jon and Dany back to Cersei, or he goes with them and fights against his sister. The only other option is he dies fighting the Night King. What’s it going to be? My thought is….why go through years and years of making you change your mind about a character just to have him be a dick in the last few episodes? Sure, he is valiant, but he isn’t sacrificing his life for anyone. He’s a soldier, and a damn good one, so the only thing I’m sure of is he will be there at the end of the series. Maybe not the closing credits, but close to it and will play a huge part. He’ll be a man with honor.
If Jamie is going to be a man with honor, it will be directly related to Brienne pushing him that direction. The problem is that Jamie and Brienne are not going to live happily ever after. Both soldiers to the end, but Brienne possesses that unflinching bond to whomever she is serving and in doing that she puts herself in bad situations. Situations like going to fight a giant army of dead people to protect the Stark ladies and she’s one to run into that battle head first. Couldn’t you see her fighting bravely right along side Jamie, jumping in the way of something to save Jamie, and then dying in the process? Dying and looking at him to tell him to do the right thing for her. For all of the great things you might think of when you think of Brienne, mostly because she is resilient and tough, lost is the fact that most of her life has been a complete shit sandwich. She’s prevailed, but at some point she’s not going to because the odds will overwhelm her.
Everyone is going to be super sad when she dies, but out of everyone, I’m more convinced she’s going to die than just about anyone. She’s the first one that will jump in the way of something terrible to protect someone….anyone….else because that’s who she is. She’s selfless and the fact that she is so willing to pledge her life and sword to others means she’s going to give her life and sword at some point. The only thing that has ever slowed her down in her quest to serve has been Jamie Lannister, so her dying to complete a transformation for him has been telegraphed for some time now. She see’s the good in him and will make him see the good in himself. Fucking men.
daenerys targaryen (2) vs ser jorah mormont (15)
The Mother of Dragons! The Breaker of Chains! The Haver of Babies? George RR Martin is a brilliant man, I’m not saying that he isn’t, but there are some thing that you can see coming from a mile away. One of those things is the foreshadowing of Jon telling Dany that maybe the lady that said you couldn’t have babies was wrong. The other is the long list of stories where a mother dies during child birth and that is on the “very possible” horizon. It won’t happen quickly and I realize that if she dies and Jon dies by sacrificing his life, then that leaves very few people to rule, but like we’ve said before Tyrion is the favorite character of GRRM, so how far fetched is is that he’s standing next to a Throne protecting it and the people until baby Jon Dragonlady is old enough to rule.
I fully admit that I am cynical when it comes to the ending and I think everyone not named Tyrion is going to die, but we’ve heard 1000’s of times that this will not be a sweet ending. The only sweet ending is Jon and Dany ruling together at the end of the series and that just isn’t happening…..I think…..so where does that leave us? Jon and Dany have the best odds to end up on the Iron Throne, but nothing about this great series has gone as we’ve expected, so I’m trying to think outside the box. That could very well be a mistake on my part, but I’m sticking with it. She’s a sure fire bet to win the first round, but it gets complicated after that.
Dear Game of Throne fan,
This is Jorah.
He’s been in love with Dany since season 1.
His sole purpose on this show has been to love her.
She doesn’t feel the same way about him.
She looked right through him at Jon Snow and Jon Snow’s abs.
Jorah is still going to love her because that’s what Jorah does.
He’s going to fucking die protecting her because he loves her.
