it has finally arrived! The much anticipated trailer for the final season of Game of Thrones dropped this morning and there is a lot to unpack. What better way to make sense of it, then to run through shot by shot in a special edition of Dear Trailer Diary.
0:03 - We’ve seen a less trained Arya running from things before, most notably the Waif, but the Waif almost killed her and at this point in her life if Arya is running from something then holy shit it must be scary.
0:11 - “I know death” is ominous, but I don’t think this is Arya telling us that she isn’t scared because the juxtaposition of her voice and her face while running is both confusing and scary.
0:23 - I want to know who she is talking to here. When she holds up the dragon glass, I would imagine that she’s talking to Gendry who will undoubtedly be making weapons at a fever pace. Side note: A Jon and Arya reunion is going to be amazing since it’s been since season 1 and they were so close, but an Arya and Gendry reunion is going to be just as fantastic. They really cared for each other and I’m curious to see if her rough exterior comes down a little bit with him.
0:25 - GET HYPE!!!!!!!!!
0:26 - Euron is a world class asshole as a person and a super murdery uncle, but he knows how to go get an army, so the Golden Company is going to be legit. We’ve heard about them for years now, so to see them show up is going to be very intriguing.
0:31 - So it looks like Edd, Beric Dondarrion, and Tormund made it out of East-watch when zombie dragon brought it down, but who knows where this is. I would assume Winterfell, but this looks serious, so wherever they are headed is going to be a messed up place. You don’t send Tormund, Edd, Beric, and Beric’s flame sword to make sandwiches in the kitchen. You send them because some legit shit needs killing.
0:38 - The narration switches to Bran, who is most likely talking to Jon about his current exemption status as a bastard. We see Cersei looking #smugAF watching her new army show up. I know Cersei is a terrible person, but if she fulfills her promise to marry Euron and they have a scene together, then I’m going to be genuinely upset that she is with someone other than Jamie. It just won’t feel right, even though Cersei and Jamie together shouldn’t feel right…..you know what I mean….I think.
0:42 - The Unsullied, dragons, Jon, and Dany are rolling into Winterfell together just gets me all kinds of hype! This is every major player coming together in one place to fight the enemy of all enemies. This confrontation is going to be epic.
0:55 - Jon and Dany in the crypts of Winterfell probably saying “oh shit we’re related and I put a baby in you. That’s probably not cool” and other stuff like “do you think I can ride one of your dragons since I’m basically a dragon myself now?” and “You have to call me daddy dragon now, that’s a new rule.” In reality, Jon is in the crypts to see Lyanna and try to make sense of what he’s been told. That will make his interactions with Dany hesitant and confusing for him on top of if she is pregnant then he’ll be conflicted about her fighting the Night King with dragons and risking losing her life and the boat baby life.
0:58 - Gendry is going to make some bad ass weapons, I’m sure of it. The hammer he made is legit, but if he turns dragon glass into a hammer for himself that will be the ultimate bad assery.
1:02 - AWWWWWWWWW!!!!!! I’m glad that he made it back to her, this is one of the sweetest love stories on the show.
1:09 - We’ve seen Cersei and her army and now she’s just drinking wine, but not much of her has been shown. Her on the Iron Throne is going to be a huge part of the series ending when the North rides towards her. The battle with the dead is going to be EPIC (!!), but there is a lot of series left after that and it revolves around her and her new army. That’s not being shown here and it’s not being shown on purpose. I keep saying the Night King is going to be dead by the end of episode 3, so that is a lot of story left.
1:15 - Dragons make Arya smile and dammit I feel the same way.
1:19 - Jon looking at the tree here is going to be huge when the series starts. Can Bran show him the truth? Is that part of the story, or does he just eventually believe Sam and Bran? Side note: I’m expecting someone that knows the truth to show up this season. Ned is dead, so who will that be? The only other person there is Howland Reed, so does he hear about the fight coming and show up? If he shows up, does Jon get the truth out of him with what happened in the Tower?
1:21 - Jamie showing up ready to throw down like old school Jamie with new school Jamie morals is maybe my favorite part of the trailer. I also noticed that Bronn wasn’t shown with Cersei, so where is he? I bet his statement that nobody gets to kill Jamie until he gets his castle is something that gets said again when Bronn shows up on the road to find Jamie. While we are on the subject of Bronn…what is his last name? We know everyone else’s last name, but not him. Is that going to be a surprise this season and does it hold a bigger meaning? I wouldn’t put it past GRRM.
1:24 - JON IS GOING TO RIDE A DRAGON NEXT TO DANY!!!!!!!
1:28 - Tyrion looks happy? Confused? He’s not in much of this trailer, so his story is….ummm….uncertain?
1:33 - Are we getting ready to throw down???
1:34 - I am not mentally prepared for Pod to get killed in battle. I’m just fucking not Game of Thrones!! Do you hear me?!?!?!?! I’m not ready for that!!!!!
1:38 - THIS IS WHAT WE PLAY FOR!!!! SOMEONE HIT SOMEONE!!!!!
1:46 - AAARRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! Come on April!!!
