Winter is here and the final season of Game of Thrones is right behind it. With only 5 weeks left until the premiere, the Soapbox Staff is going to give you thoughts and predictions each week between now and then. Get Hype!
The battle with the Night King is approaching and we all expect Jon Snow to be the one to defeat him. Does that make him the best fighter in the Seven Kingdoms? Who do you think is the best overall fighter left of on the existing cast?
Josh - I’m still not convinced that the Night King will be defeated. I think that is the most likely outcome, but they set it up with Crastor that the White Walkers can be appeased with an offering. Could be that Jon Snow makes some kind of deal with them to make them go away instead of them being defeated?
As far as best overall fighter in the show? My vote goes to the jewel of the Sapphire Islands. Brienne of motherfucking Tarth! She is the only one on the show to have beaten The Hound in one on one combat. She bested Ser Loras Tyrell. She held off a damn grizzly bear(!!) for crying out loud. Granted, Jaime Lannister came in and saved her there, but she took a few swipes from it and stayed on her feet. I think here most brutal beat down is yet to come. She is going to absolutely crush Tormund when she snubs him for Jamie Lannister. Brienne of Tarth
Armando – Ok, first off, Jon Snow will not defeat the Night King and if he does it’s a slap in the face to all the great warriors in the Game of Thrones series. Having said that…...he probably is. Before we continue, can we just acknowledge that Jon Snow is the luckiest warrior in history? Name a single fight, or battle, that he hasn’t needed to be saved, was shown mercy to survive, or straight up killed (then brought back to life). Don’t get me wrong; I like Jon Snow, he’s just the General Custer of GOT. He may be a great person, but he’s a horrible tactician.
So, now that we have Jon Snow out of the way, let’s have a real discussion. We can all agree that two handed Jaime Lannister could take this hands down, but not hand (singular) down. Unfortunately, two-handed Jaime was killed in season 3, and now he’s reduced to hand jobs from a gold casting. I hope he has access to warm water on his way North, for comforts sake anyways.
The obvious choices, outside of Jaime, are Bronn, The Hound, and Brienne. Wait just one minute though! As they say in late night infomercials, “But wait! There’s more!”. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you Tormund Giantsbane. I’m going for the quick and ruthless with my pick and also because he straight up DGAF! He’s not fighting for money like Bronn. He’s not fighting for valor, pride, or duty like Brienne. He’s not even fighting out of vengeance and anger caused by his miserable life (and face), like The Hound is. He’s fighting for fundamental things like survival! And yes fighting to straight up murder, destroy, and disintegrate you. After he is done, he’ll laugh about it, drink some ale, and find the nearest animal to eat. Nothing is stronger than fighting for survival, and Tormund is a survivor and savage AF. Tormund Giantsbane
Stephen – This is such a tough question because there are so many variables to it. A young Jaime Lannister ends this discussion before it starts, but Ol’ Gold Fingers isn’t beating any of the top 5 with his left hand. If I had to win a one on one fight, then give me Bronn. The Hound is my sentimental choice and is formidable against anyone, but I want someone who isn’t afraid to fight dirty. Someone who isn’t afraid to pull his secret knife, or stage an accident where a young lady falls off of her horse and he gets a castle.
We were minutes away from a Bronn vs Hound showdown, but never got it, so who knows how that would have ended, but I would have a hard time betting against Bronn. Remember, the question is overall fighter, not swordsman, so we aren’t talking about just single combat sword fight. Jon may very well be the best there. If it’s a fight, give me the fighter, and give me the fighter that will cheat and fight dirty to win at all costs. Ser Bronn of the Blackwater.
Who knows which or how many main characters will die, but the chances are vast and have so many variations on what may or may not happen. The only thing we can say with certainty is that Cersei Lannister is going to get murdered in the face by someone. Who do you think will be the one to take out Cersei Lannister in the final season?
Josh – With the prophecies of Maggie the Frog all having come true thus far, I have got to go with Jaime Lannister here. Story-wise, it carries the most weight for me. You’ve got Jaime going from Kingslayer to Queenslayer and Kin-slayer in one fell swoop. And it complete his redemption arc. He’s already left her to go north to fight the army of the dead. He saw what was coming and that Cersei did not care that they were going to wipe out half of the population of Westeros. He killed The Mad King because he was going to burn all of the innocents of King’s Landing. It fits that he would stop Cersei from doing something similar.
Armando – Jaime Lannister. This one is so obvious to me. Cersei is bat shit crazy and always has been, and letting Jaime go at the end of Season 7 will be her downfall. She should have killed Jaime when she had the chance, but she didn’t out of love. Ever since she has become Queen Cersei, she has been even more bat shit crazy, especially since she’s holding on to what little is left of her identity. She was born to breed her brother’s children….errrr uhhhhhh……heirs to the throne and now that they are all dead, the throne is all she has left. If anyone who has watched believes in foreshadowing or prophecy, it’s without a doubt going to be Jaime.
I originally thought Tyrion would be the one to kill Cersei, but that’s too obvious even though Tyrion has a million reasons to. Also, Tyrion killed his father, so that would be leaning into an obvious choice. Jaime killing Cersei though?? That’s betrayal on a level 10! Killing your twin, your lover, the mother of your children (sure they’re all dead, but still), and your Queen?! Jaime’s gonna be the one. He is the King slayer after all, time to slay that Queen.
Stephen – Arya mother fu*king Stark! There are so many strong women roles on Game of Thrones, that you would almost expect Cersei (one of the strongest) to be taken out by another woman, right? Brienne would be the strongest physically, but Arya might be the better fighter as hard as that is to believe in a world where Brienne exists. Brienne isn’t just walking into the Throne room though to find Cersei by herself. Everyone would see her coming, so you have to think of who could make it all the way to her. Faceless men style, Arya can get by The Mountain who is always close by and could kill Cersei and bounce before he could even move a zombie muscle.
We’ve also seen from the trailer and the battle with The Waif that Arya is fast AF, so she could get away from him easily. Plus, can he even speak at this point? How would The Mountain go tell someone that Cersei is dead and it not turn into a “what’s that Lassie? Timmy is in the well?” situation. Arya is going to finish her list and is taking out The Mountain AND Cersei within minutes of each other.
There will be several reunions still to come in the final season and several characters meeting for the first time. Who are you most excited about sharing the screen for the first time or the first time in many years?
Josh – Arya and The Hound. They have been the best duo on this show. I know I just said that I think Jaime will kill Cersei, but I would love to see the two of them make their way to King’s Landing for Arya to kill Cersei and #CLEGANEBOWL!!!!! I honestly don’t think that their reunion will be a big part of the final season. That part of the story is done, and with Arya finally back with her family I see her being with Jon way more than with Sandor.
I’m also excited to see Jon Snow and Sam Tarly together again. There will surely be some tension when Sam learns that Daenerys burned his Father and Brother alive and that Jon is her lover now. Maybe not. Sam hated his dad, but family is still family. Unless you’re a Lannister at this point.
Armando – Oh this one is easy, and may be the reunion of all reunions since they have not seen each other for the longest amount of time. Bran Stark and Jon Snow. This is intriguing on so many levels.
Jon last saw Bran at the beginning of season one, when Bran was in his 3 week coma.
Bran is now an adult, he’s cold and heartless, and knows literally everything.
Bran is the only living person that knows Jon Snow is a Targaryen and rightful heir to the throne.
Where does GOT even go with that? Does he have an even bigger target on his back? Obviously no one cares about incest, so does that mean Dany and Jon rule as Aunt and Nephew? Do they continue to bang? I also have my suspicions of Bran. There’s something missing about him, besides the obvious PTSD he suffers from the future LSD-laced mind trips he’s taken. He’s got something dark lurking. I feel like he’s the A-bomb in this. Could he destroy everybody? Humans, white walkers, The North, The South, everybody?
Stephen – I have several other choices here, but I’m a sentimental guy. I cannot wait for a Jon and Arya reunion. They had such a special connection in season one and he was the one that gave her Needle before he left for The Wall. She’s become so awesome with it too that he’s going to be super impressed and she is going to be impressed by the fact that he now is with a lady that has dragons. She knows all about the dragons of the past and you can see from the trailer that she’s very happy about seeing them now.
There are not many things more impressive than telling your sister, “Hey I’m kind of dating the Queen now and she has dragons”. That would be like you telling your sister in real life “Hey I’ve been seeing this lady, she’s the president of Columbia and she totally has two yachts”. It would be impressive to say the least. That first hug between them is going to be so satisfying that there is a good chance that I cry a little bit. Don’t judge me, I’m not dead inside like The Mountain!
