With 4 weeks left until we find out who it is, I am going to make a case for a few people as I work through my The Walking Dead Pool Rankings. First up is fan favorite, and soon to be daddy, Glenn.
Why is Glenn the choice to get killed?
The first and obvious reason is that Negan killed Glenn in the comics, so why wouldn't he do it in the show? That answer is complicated. The show does a lot of things from the comics, but they also realize that the audience for the show is much larger than that of the comics, so sacrifices have to be made. Does that mean that Glenn is safe? No, but the show listens to it's fans, which is why Carol is alive and kicking all of the ass on the show, but has been dead for a long time in the comics. TV Glenn is a fan favorite, but not as much as you might think so I could see him getting a send off, but doesn't that make this too obvious?
How would Glenn getting killed affect the current story?
We know that Maggie is a very close 2nd to Rick in terms of having everyone she loves getting murdered in their face, so that makes Glenn a prime target. Maggie is pregnant and has lost her entire family to walkers and a Hershel head to the Governor, so her story line is dependent on Glenn and their baby. If Glenn dies, then Season 7 Maggie will be depressed and probably borderline suicidal. Is that a direction that the show wants to take though? That is what I'm trying to figure out. If I stick to the comics and rank Glenn in the number 1 spot of the next to die pool, then I believe that comic Negan and TV Negan are headed down the same path. Part of me believes that, but part of me thinks that there is more that is going to happen.
Is there a twist coming that we don't see?
This is where I'm leaning because The Walking Dead isn't going to do things the way that everyone is thinking, so do they make it look like Glenn and then pull a bait and switch on us? Glenn jumps in the way of someone to protect them in typical Glenn fashion, only to have another character pay the price for him? Glenn is always at his best when he is defying expectations and has been since he rescued Rick from that tank in Season 1, but what happens if he jumps in the way of Maggie and we have to see him deal with the devastation of seeing Maggie and his unborn baby being killed because of him? That is something we haven't seen much of from him and a twist that would defy everything we think from the comics.
Where should Glenn be ranked if not number one?
That is the million dollar question! Ultimately, I don't think Glenn is the person that got beat down at the end of Season 6, but I also don't believe that he is safe either so I can't rank him at the bottom of the list. Remember that there are 24 people and the top 5 spots are the most important, so if I think he is getting taken out, then I need to put him top 5, but if I'm just uncertain and it could go either way, then the middle of the pack people won't swing the final outcome. I think he's getting taken out, and several people are getting taken out by Negan, so he's going to be high on my list. I don't think he's the mystery person when the Lucille Reveal takes place, so he isn't number one.
Where does Glenn rank on the list?
3rd feels like the right spot if I believe he is eating a baseball bat this season, which I believe is happening. When the world goes crazy, Glenn is the guy in the middle of everything trying to save the day. This time it doesn't work out, but I'm betting on it not happening like it did in the comics.
