Our long national nightmare is over! The title and first trailer for the second installment of Avengers was released this morning. Huzzah!!! The second and final installment is called Avengers: Endgame, which at first glance you would think just means “oh they are in the endgame like Dr. Strange said and they have to figure out how to beat Thanos and fix what he just broke”. That is what I thought the first time I watched it, but the more I watch, the more I think something else might be coming. Here are the two questions I have from the trailer.
Who is coming to save tony stark?
The trailer opens on Tony recording a message that he hopes finds Pepper through his mask. Food gone. Water gone. Oxygen close to being depleted. He knows the the end is near and he is sending a final message to the only woman he loves. We know that Tony isn’t going to die though, but we don’t know who is going to come get him. The Guardians are gone and there isn’t anyone else around in space that is going to see him and save his life. Remember that the entire galaxy is sorting through what just happened, so they are a little busy with things in general. So who is it? Thor is around, but Tony can’t communicate with home, so they don’t know that he is alive. On top of that, they fought Thanos, so why would anyone think they survived that anyway? Captain Marvel was called in the end credits of Infinity War, but her first order of business isn’t going to be looking for Tony either.
My theory is that Pepper has had enough of Tony heading off into space to fight giant monsters while she is stuck back on earth wondering if he will survive, so she puts on the Rescue armor and goes looking for him herself. I think this opens the movie and gets things moving with Tony heading back to Earth to start picking up the pieces of what Thanos destroyed. I would also be willing to bet that there is a Tony/Aunt Mae scene where he tells her Peter is dead and it’s his fault. The reason you cast actors that have the talent these do is to really lean into the emotional part of what just happened. There is going to be a lot of mourning and tears to start this movie and with the talent they have, I think they can pull it off.
why show a picture of peggy carter in a trailer?
This trailer leans heavy into Captain America and for some reason shows a picture of his compass with a picture of Peggy Carter. This is from the very first Captain America movie and hasn’t shown up since. We’ve seen old Peggy and a quick make out session with Peggy’s niece, but why this shot with the throwback to the first Cap movie? Why now and why in the trailer? Marvel doesn’t do anything by accident, so maybe they wanted these questions so they could say it was there the entire time.
My theory is that he is going to sacrifice himself again….or at least some version of that. Time travel with the help of Scott Lang back to get the soul stone from Red Skull and stopping Thanos before he could happen. If he goes back to the 1940’s to take it from Skull, then he can stop it, but remember that the soul stone extracts a heavy toll. Is he going to take the stone and be taken to the planet to guide people that look for it? Essentially taking the place of Skull from Infinity War? Is he going to sacrifice himself so Peggy can get the stone and destroy it and undo everything that was done?
OR….is she going to sacrifice herself this time so Steve can destroy the stone and stay in the 40’s and have his life back since he has already sacrificed so much? All of these things are plausible, but I my best educated guess is that Endgame really means the end for Captain America as we know him in the MCU. We know that Chris Evans is retiring as Captain America, but are they retiring that character all together? Is he going to die in this movie so everyone else can live? Does Bucky take the shield after the does? The trailer is great, but leaves us with more questions that answers, but luckily we only have to wait another 4 months to find out for sure.
